*In Spring 2013, after years of funding my own professional memberships and professional travel, I made the financial decision to not renew my membership with the Modern Language Association. Because of this, I had to forfeit my seat on these important committees. This saddened me because many other faculty teaching in my type of institution also felt the squeeze of no raises for years and were unable to sustain MLA membership or attend the yearly MLA Convention. In 2016, I once again was able to afford yearly dues for the MLA, but that’s the only organization I can afford even with raises negotiated by the California Faculty Association union.
